Tennessee came into Thursday night’s SEC showdown with Mississippi State on a mission to secure a spot in the SEC Tournament.
It was a back and forth game between the Vols and Bulldogs, until the 33rd minute when the Vols struck first off the foot of Meghan Flynn.
That was the first goal of the year for Meghan Flynn and was the catalyst to get Tennessee going.
It was 1-0 at half in favor of the the Vols. To start the second half the teams, both team started out slow until Tennessee’s Rylie O’Keefe shot and scored a goal from 40 yards out to give the Vols a 2-0 advantage in the 43rd minute of the game .
That was O’Keefe fifth goal on the year and put her second on the team in goals, behind Hannah Wilkinson who has nine this year
Both teams went back and forth, but in the 52nd minute Carlyn Baldwin closed the door on the Bulldogs with a goal, making it 3-0 Vols .
The third goal proved to seal the deal, as the Vols won the game 3-0 and secured a spot in the SEC Tournament.
Head coach Brian Pensky said that it was a great team victory today with three different players scoring in the game.
Pensky also said that Miss State was playing for their post season lives , and a good team has to find a way to win and thata what they did today.
Meghan Flynn scored her first goal of the season today she said that before she went out there, her mom gave her a great pep talk that helped her before going out on the field.
“It was also a great team win”. Flynn said.
Flynn also explained scoring her first goal will help her with her confidence going into playing South Carolina on Sunday.
Rylie O’Keefe said Tennessee had a lot of injures, but it was good for other players to come in and step up . They’ll need more that this year.
When asked if her 40 yard goal was the longest in her career, O’Keefe said yes, she just tried to lower her shot from the first time. She did it in the 1st half, it went over the crossbar.
The Vols return to Regal Stadium on Sunday at 5p.m. for Senior Day against No. 2 South Carolina .
